cPanel licence tiers, explained without the sales pitch
Why your hosting bill changes when you cross five accounts, and what each tier actually covers.
Until 2019 a cPanel licence cost the same whether a server held one account or two hundred. That changed, and most hosting customers found out the hard way — through an invoice.
Here is the structure as it stands, and what it means for what you pay.
The four tiers
cPanel now prices by how many accounts a server holds:

The account count is the only thing that decides your tier. Not disk, not traffic, not domains.
Why this catches people out
Two reasons.
The first is that the threshold is easy to cross without noticing. You add a sixth client and you have moved from Admin to Pro. Nothing warns you — the licence simply costs more at the next renewal.
The second is that the fee has risen every January since the change. A tier that was affordable when you bought it may not be two years later, and that increase gets passed on to you by almost every host.
What to ask a host before you buy
Three questions, and the answers should be immediate:
- Is the licence included in the price, or added separately? If it is separate, ask for the figure before you order.
- What happens when I cross a tier? You want notice and a quoted difference, not a silent increase.
- What happened at the last cPanel price rise? How a host handled the last one tells you how they will handle the next.
The honest answer about alternatives
DirectAdmin and CyberPanel both cost less. If you are running your own sites and comfortable learning a different panel, either is a reasonable choice.
But if you host clients, cPanel is what they already know. Retraining a client on a new panel is a support cost you will pay for years, and it usually outweighs the licence saving.
